He was born in Çorum in 1963. At the age of six, he migrated with his family, first to Ankara, and in 1969 to Melbourne, Australia, where he still resides. He completed his primary, secondary, and higher education in Australia. In 1985, Ateş graduated from the Department of Translation and Sociology at Deakin University. He later studied Arabic at the Middle Eastern Studies Department of the University of Melbourne and completed a teaching program at Monash University. Throughout his career, he worked as an interpreter and consultant in various service units affiliated with different ministries. In 1997, together with a group of friends, he entered the business world by establishing Pacific International, the company that owns the Freshplus supermarket chain. Since 1977, he has volunteered in numerous national and international non-governmental organizations. He has been among the founding members of many associations, foundations, schools, and mosques. Representing the Turkish community in Australia, he has participated as a delegate and speaker in national and international meetings. For many years, Ateş has also been writing newspaper columns and providing commentary on radio. He is married and has one child.
