VOLUNTEERING

Volunteering enhances personal connections, trust, and solidarity, benefiting both individuals and society while providing opportunities for civic participation (UN Volunteer Handbook, 2013).

The Concept of Civil Society

The concept of civil society emerged in the second half of the 18th century. The etymological roots of the term "volunteering" are said to originate from the French word voluntaire. In other languages, definitions of volunteering are often used to emphasize interpersonal cooperation, productivity, or collectivism.

People participate in volunteer activities for various reasons. Individuals with different motivations come together in civil society organizations (CSOs), where they not only recognize each other and their differences but also engage in productive endeavors, applying qualities such as knowledge, experience, dynamism, tolerance, sharing, professional attitudes, and responsibility.

Be a Volunteer!

The Green Crescent Movement aims to raise a generation living a healthy life through role models who embrace its mission and vision, share their knowledge and experience with society—especially children and young people—and dedicate their time, skills, and expertise with a sense of social responsibility.

Participating in international volunteering activities also contributes to interacting with foreign countries, sharing one’s own culture, creating global awareness, seeking solutions to international issues, and increasing social awareness.

According to the 2018 State of the World’s Volunteerism Report published by United Nations Volunteers (UNV), there are 1 billion volunteers worldwide. Additionally, it is reported that 57% of these volunteers are women and that their efforts amount to the work of 109 million full-time employees.

Activities carried out with volunteers help develop civil society and enable individuals to engage in meaningful social activities while spending quality time. Efforts supported by volunteers contribute to raising social awareness while also enhancing the volunteers’ own awareness. Furthermore, they support personal development in many areas, particularly in the prevention of substance addiction. Every year, on December 5, volunteers around the world celebrate “International Volunteer Day.”
